Question 4: This Is Water

In the Commencement Speech "this is water " the author makes it seem like life will be horrible repetitive lifestyle for everyone as they step into adulthood as he kind of rants in Pg.3 about going to the supermarket frustrated  after a long tiring day of work just to forget that theirs is no food in the house and that you have to go through traffic and angrily grocery shop with all of the other tired people and etc. He says " There happen to be whole large parts of adult American life that nobody talks about in commencement speeches. One such part involves boredom, routine, and petty frustration. In my eyes this is not true and that your lifestyle and happiness is totally dependent on you. Life is whatever you decide to make it and if the author made it seem that way then that is his fault even though it may be an example. You have the choice to wake up with a routine  and choose to be bored when theirs a million hobbies to get into or to be frustrated when you shouldn't because you woke up this morning and that is a huge blessing. I feel your life is up to you and that is why people go to college so they wont be miserable working a hard job and etc. Loosing patience and getting frustrated is that persons own decision as he/she decides if they want to be happy or not which plays a part in determining if you live a happy healthy life. Then on Pg.5 he tells us he is is in a more socially conscious form and what he thinks throughout the day, but then again on Pg.6 he says "Again, please don't think that I'm giving you moral advice, or that I'm saying you're “supposed to” think this way, or that anyone expects you to just automatically do it, because it's hard, it takes will and mental effort, and if you're like me, some days you won't be able to do it, or you just flat-out won't want to." which imply s he wants us to think like him in the future which i just don't agree with because his way of thinking doesn't suit any and everybody from the looks of his descriptions and examples. Everyone has their own mind and that the people we hang around have a small role as they do influence us to think for better or worse depending on the crowd we surround ourselves by.

  1. I agree with this statement. I don’t think everything effects you like he says it does in the reading. I think you effect yourself and how you think. I agree that we do pick who we hang around with and who influences us. That is just how life works. Even though bad stuff happens to people, some people can just be in a great place in their life with everything they want and those small things he says will effect them won’t, it all just depends on where you are with yourself in life. It is not as easy as he says it is to just change how you feel about things. I understand there are ways to temporarily take your mind off of something but you cannot just make a feeling go away. I also disagree with this whole reading as it is very contradicting considering the author killed himself after writing this.

  2. I completely agree with this. Life is what you make it. Even though human beings do go through rough times and It can get hard you can always get through any situation it just depends on your mindset. This statement is so 100% true because in the speech he does want us to agree with him because he tries to be persuasive by using every day-to-day situations. I also agree that everyone does have their own mindset, but people have the choice to make the most out of our lives because its the only one we have. I agree that getting frustrated or upset in a situation it depends on that person if they want to happy and try to move on or to just sink in deeper into depression. In addition, people are effected by the outside world way to much and that is how Wallace is using his examples to relate to the audience. People do have a choice to be happy and enjoy life, but it is only up to them to decide that.
