I do not agree with This Is Water for several reasons after reanalyzing the message in the speech. This Is Water invites people to break free of their " natural default setting" and take into account that you are not the center of the universe and rather you should consider other lives of other people as well or risk committing an emotional suicide in a sense. While the message sounds inspirational and heartfelt, it comes off as hypocritical to me for two reasons. For one, we know the author did not adhere to his own advice and sadly committed suicide a few years after delivering this speech. Had he followed his own wisdom he may be alive today, but rather he was unable to cope with the trials he faced in life and could not, yet hear he was encouraging people to see life in a different manner. The author also states at the end of his speech," It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive, day in and day out", possibly meaning that while he was alive he still did not have the strength or he motivation to apply or try enough for himself to follow his own advice. Secondly, I feel as if the author does not speak from everyone as there are people who live happy, optimistic lives and have more concern for others rather than themselves. These individuals may not be perfect, but from personal experiences I've seen people like this that day in and day out it seem like all they do is help and care of others whether it be teachers, doctors, church groups, etc. We are not all in a sense always in our " natural default setting" as from time to time we do look out for others rather than ourselves and as I previously said, there are people who's personalities and characters seem to have surpassed the supposed "natural default setting".
