Dinner Date- Question 1

Authors David Foster Wallace from This is Water and author Toni Morrison of Toni Morrison- Nobel Lecture happen to run into each other at dinner at their favorite restaurant and begin to talk about how great of authors they are.  As they are talking, the two realize that their two works of literature, This is Water and Toni Morrison’s Nobel Lecture are very similar in the concept of ideas presented.  In his writing Wallace quotes “And the truth is that most of these suicides are actually dead long before they pull the trigger” which can easily be compared to when Morrison states that “Underneath the eloquence, the glamour, the scholarly associations, however stirring or seductive, the heart of such language is languishing, or perhaps not beating at all - if the bird is already dead.”  The two see that before one even can realize it, a person may already be dead on the inside and just happen to be going through the motions of everyday life.  Both give examples of bad situations, but the two could easily agree that in life bad things happen to good people, but that in the end, everyone has a choice, they can either sit around and pity themselves or they can get up and do something to fix it.  At the end of their dinner together, the two authors agree that they share multiple common ideas and thoughts and can agree with each other on almost all subjects.
