Every day, an individual typically interacts with hundreds of people a day, engaging in various situations. Author of This is Water David Foster Wallace and Nobel Lecture by Toni Morrison were both inspired by that ideology as they based their famous speeches on that concept. Both speeches are comparative in the message that they convey however both convey the message in different ways.Wallace spoke about the little everyday activities that an individual participates in, varying from long hours at the job to grocery shopping and driving on the highway. Morrison’s work featured the tale of a respected prophet that many came to for answers about the unknown. In both works, the message conveyed is that the outcome of any situation is ultimately up to that individual. Wallace’s speech focused more on a broad approach, using actions such as road rage and long lines at the grocery store to relate to more people reacting while Morrison focused on a certain type of people, mainly those who like to challenge authority as well as how there are many different uses of language to convey a message. Both represent the true nature of humans and how it is up to us to determine the outcomes of situations based on the attitude that one gives in dealing with others every day.
