When we view of how our brains
really work we tend to see what our specialties are of how we can use it in the
world. Jill Bolte Taylor demonstrates in her TED talk discussion of an event
that happened to her when she suddenly suffered a stroke that damaged her left
side of her brain. Which caused her to lose the ability to communicated with
her brain as a like a little voice is telling that, “There is a problem.”
However, she demonstrates of an experience like no other, that she was amazed
to see that she could view a different side of her mind as she stated in her
lecture, “how many scientists would like to study their own brain from the
inside out?” From what she has explained from her experience of what she
encountered made me wonder of how my brain functions when I’m around people and
how I perceive myself as a human being.
The hemisphere I would choose mostly
would have to be my left sided of my brain reasoning is because we process more
memory and self-awareness around us. Jill Taylor decries the time of the stroke
that she began to fell a strange feeling of her body no functioning properly as
she stated, “I realized that everything inside of my body has slowed way down.”
Knowing what she is explaining of her experience makes me wonder of how our
bodies would react if our brains on the left or right side don’t respond as
well either one. She also explains that our left side of our brains is our “serial
processor” meaning that we process memory of “what’s in the past and in the
future.” As for the right side she describes it as a “parallel processor” of
our brains that “what this present moment looks like.” I would agree with Jill
Taylor that our brains have two sides that have “two different personalities”,
but after listening to her view of our hemispheres are in way makes me view
that our “serial processor” has more reliable ability to see what is going on
as we live our lives today.
I agree with Guillermo if it would come down to choose a hemisphere I would also choose the left side of my brain. Jill Taylor explains that this side of the brain is the one that “categorizes and organizes all that information, associates it with everything in the past we've ever learned, and projects into the future all of our possibilities. And our left hemisphere thinks in language.” (Taylor 4:55.) To be honest I couldn’t imagine living without an inner monologue. Sure her experience sounds more than tempting to have the opportunity to experience “being connected to the energy all around” (Taylor 3:44). But our inner monologue decides so much. It describes perspective, analyzes, conserves values taught, achieves memories and creates personality. All these would disappear if you chose the right hemisphere of the brain meaning you would lose your sense of person. After viewing Jill Taylor’s emotional response to her experience, it made me value the functionality of both sides of my brain. At the end she asks the audience to choose between hemisphere as a reflection of how we want to view and experience the world around us. I agree that with the functionality of the left hemisphere we would have a clearer ability to fully experience and see what’s going on with all of our surroundings.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Guillermo ,After watching that video I do think about how my brain works when I'm around people and how I perceive myself as a human being. And the hemisphere that mostly describes me is the left side because I always thinking in the future about my life or just what I want to be doing in the next few months. I'm always thinking about me and how I can improve on different things that can make me better for future purposes. And a lot of my dreams are in the future like when I'm in my thirty's and I'm out of school with a steady job.
ReplyDeleteAgreeing with all three of you guys, I would also have to agree upon the decision that if there was a choice to be made, the left hemisphere is the one I would pick to keep. Dr. Jill Taylor goes into depth on each side of the hemispheres that she experienced lose with during her stroke and it has made me able to chose which in the end I would rather have if I could not have both. Even though some of our past experiences we are not proud of and somethings we wish we did not remember like Dr. Jill Taylor states losing “37 years of emotional baggage,” I would have to say that I feel the past experiences we as individuals have been through, have brought you to the person you are today at this time. I fully agree with the ideas presented by Jill Taylor about both of the left and right hemispheres, and the ideas that the right connects us to the energy around us, right here, right now and the left thinks in language organizing all of our information. If I ever had to lose a side of my brain, I would want it to be at the end of my life so that I would not lose much time for my happiness in this world.
ReplyDeleteAfter hearing and listening to Dr Jill Bolte Taylor’s presentation, I would choose the left hemisphere definitely because the way the left brain that is described by Jill basically describes my life. The left brain seems like the important side of the brain and for someone not to choose this side would be weird. The stroke on the left side of Jill’s brain affected her reading, writing, speech, understanding and vision. I do choose the left side of the brain for the importances of it work in our lives but the right side of the brain also makes us who we are. We are able to use our senses to “think in the moment and to think in pictures”. Yes the right side is the “lala land” of the brain, our right hemisphere receives information from our senses, processes the information to send out responses to react to the present moment. When we choose to use one side of our brain is up to us. The left side is always up to work and would be used when work is needed to be done and planning for future events . The right side of the brain is use in the moment of a situation that needs a response from the body. I agree with Guillermo’s post in every way and I would also like to add to conclude it all that though we have two hemispheres inside our skull calling it a brain, as Jill would say, “ it’s the we inside of me”. We should not take our brain for granted just because one side is preferred more than the other.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with G because in everyday life there is definitely a choice to be made and how your brain process information. Especially the part when Jill realized her brother had this brain disease. It's definitely not healthy for anyone to have. That's where you get these brain waves to where your brain start giving you signals and at one point Jill found out she had a brain disorder as well. Basically, her brain shut her body down not allowing her to do what normally any typical person could do which was talking, walking, eating, etc. This can be very difficult.
ReplyDeleteThe left brain hemisphere is the side I would say I use the most because I have to maintain and process information. I don't retain information I obtain right at the moment otherwise i'll just forget it and not have any memory. I like to actually learn. For Instance,I use my left brain for my classes to take notes so later on I can use that later to study for future preferences.
I most definitely agree with the choice you made about which hemisphere to choose. I chose this side because I believe that the left hemisphere of your brain makes you who you are. Without the left side of your brain, all the learning and experiences you had would totally diminish. The left hemisphere of your brain contains language, past experiences, reading, speech, your ability to write, and predicts possible outcomes of the future. It is the most valuable side of your brain. However, the right side is also very important, both sides of the brain should not be taken for granted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything that you said in your post Guillermo. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor explained to the audience that the right hemisphere of our brans is responsible for parallel processes—what’s in the present moment, visual images, movements of body senses. She also explained that the left hemisphere is responsible for serial processes, linearly, past and future events, details, methodical processes, language, and the concept of “I am”. I agree with you about choosing to save the left hemisphere of our brains. In Jill’s scenario when she had her stroke she was able to detect that something was wrong and that a stroke was taking place in her brain. She realized this due to the left hemisphere of her brain and without knowing that something was wrong things could’ve gotten a lot worse for her. You are right about the left hemisphere of our brain being the controller of our “self-awareness”. Essentially, it helps us survive and detect if anything is wrong with us. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that the right hemisphere is very important to our overall health, but if I had to pick and choose, I would choose to save the left hemisphere of my brain.
