Jill Bolte Taylor - My stroke of insight

Dr. Taylor differentiated the two hemisphere of a human brain by explaining how they process information independently. The right hemisphere process the information as energy and through sensory and create a big picture. It represent people as “energy-beings” connected with a flow of energy, merging and unite with others. Dr. Taylor suggested that the right hemisphere would be a peace-maker for it brings people together. The left hemisphere, according to her, has a better sense of individual identity. It processes information by picking and breaking down small details from the big picture. Instead of feeling like its right neighbor, the left hemisphere of the brain does the thinking, and, particularly in language which involves more with logic and reasoning. As stated by Dr. Taylor, the left hemisphere subconsciously separates and individualizes the person from the pattern of the world.
Dr. Taylor personally chose the right hemisphere to interact with the world because by blocking the left hemisphere and only experiencing what remained gave her the ultimate peace and a new look on life. However, I would choose the left hemisphere of my brain to face the world any day. I believe by allowing the power of individual sensibility of our left hemisphere, we would stimulate the complexity and exhilaration of life. Life should be explored and exploited, not just taken for granted. Sometimes we feel too much but think too little. Personally, I want to think more, to find my innermost voice that tells me to swim against the current of the world and have self-awareness. I don’t believe in “living in the moment” or “it is as good as it gets.” With the right hemisphere, you receive tranquility and order; however, it seems like you have to trade your identity and group yourself with the rest of the world which can be tedious. But by utilizing the left hemisphere we can experience the world as who we are and care less about how the it should be estimated by the standard of society. The universe’s ultimate source of happiness is cultivated from unfolded knowledge. Therefore, the concept of constant thinking and working are more satisfying than being content or idle with the presence.

  1. Interesting choice on which hemisphere you would choose. I too would choose the left hemisphere, but for different reasons. I would choose it to be aware of my surroundings and interpret what is going on around me. Personally, I need to understand everything I can or else I’d experience great discomfort and anxiety. When I was little I would keep every drawer, every box, every door open because I needed to know what was inside each at any given moment. My mother got mad at me because I left the house a mess, but personally I would prefer to be aware of what is around me.
At first I had trouble answering this question because I came across the thought ‘how would not using my right hemisphere affect my left hemisphere?’ Obviously, they are both dependent on each other one way or another, so if I stopped using my right hemisphere would I still be able to use my left side? The left side allows us to remember past events and anticipate the future, but the right side allows us to interpret the present through emotions and memories. Without the right hemisphere, there would be no new processing of information. This means that the functions of the left hemisphere would be weakened. However, we would still be able to recognize ourselves as separate individuals, and I think that’s a huge plus.

    1. If I had a choice of a hemisphere, I would also choose my left hemisphere. The left hemisphere deals with being organized and prepared for tomorrow’s adventure by using your past experiences. It basically connects the dots in your brain between what’s happening outside to the inside. However, along with Nathan, I would choose the left hemisphere because I like to be in control of what happens and when. I like to be knowledgeable in what goes on in my life day to day and I value memories which help me when I make decisions. You explained that you chose the left hemisphere because” by allowing the power of individual sensibility of our left hemisphere, we would stimulate the complexity and exhilaration of life. Life should be explored and exploited, not just taken for granted”. Your explanation therefore places you wanting to side with the right hemisphere. The right hemisphere is about living live in the moment, enjoying the surprises of life and accepting what is happening in the now. With the right hemisphere, you combine with everyone else in the world, not being anything significant, you don’t just allow yourself to make your individual footprint as you would with the left hemisphere.

  2. I really like how you it is you mentioned the differences of the two hemispheres. You have a nice way with words.
I also really liked why it was you would choose the left hemisphere. I think it’s crazy how the two can be so different. You said you would prefer to choose the left side of the brain to interact with because it would make reality just a bit more difficult with the right side. With the right hemisphere you definitely experience something no one can ever be aware of. It is experienced as a baby but it isn’t fully appreciated the way she explained it. In my opinion she is truly lucky to have felt what she did. Just the way she spoke of having found her place of euphoria was intriguing. It’s amazing of how blind we are to what is really in front of us by the responsibilities we hold when we are conscious. I feel I would rather function with the right hemisphere. In my opinion it would be easier to truly appreciate what is really in front of us. The routine we live in blocks us from ever feeling what she called “nirvana”. If it were up to me, I would like to experience that one day because it can give me a outlook on something that’s been in front of me the entire time but never had the opportunity to truly and wholly appreciate.

  3. I would also choose the left hemisphere. I like how you said "Life should be explored and exploited, not just taken for granted." Because I totally believe the same thing, we should get to explore and see things for ourselves rather than taking the easy way and choosing "nirvana" as Jill Botle would say. The left side singles us out, puts us alone and away from everyone else, that is another reason I would choose the left side. I would want to be alone and have to figure things out alone rather than having peace. I would want to as you said Jenson "explore" what my life would be like instead of knowing how good life would be on the right hemisphere. Jill Botle also mentions how on the right hemisphere you experience everything as a baby would. I would not like that because you are basically starting new. I mean sure you would get the chance to change things and create the perfect life you've always wanted. In my opinion the left hemisphere just sounds like a better choice. I would like as mentioned above to have the power to explore another option of life rather that what I have already experienced.

  4. Jensen I agree with you also. Dr. Taylor talks about how the left side of your brain gives us a sense of identity, and it helps us understand who we are. This is something that I too feel that I would need in the world more than utilizing the right side of my brain more. I personally am a very introverted person and so I have a hard time letting the outside world in sometimes, and I think that If I was only able to use the right side of my brain I would be super anxious and never able to reach that level of introverted happiness again because everything would be so so overwhelming. On the other hand, I wouldn't honestly like losing either side of my brain, it sounds super chaotic. Irene I also agree with you about how crazy it is to think about how different both sides of our brain are. I had never really paid attention to the way my brain/personality worked (who does) but it's super interesting to hear Dr. Taylor talk about her experience and the way she felt her soul leave her body, and the things that changed around her while she was having the stroke.
