BLOG POST Q2 - OCT 12 [CB]

I would choose the right hemisphere to live in if I could, but I usually stay in the left one in my daily life. I tremendously relate to Jill Bolte Taylor’s ‘Nirvana’, and her words, “if I have found Nirvana and I'm still alive, then everyone who is alive can find Nirvana”, are personally very relatable, because I am a huge believer in finding this inner peace, and if more people in this world were able to understand what she was trying to say, especially those living in developed countries whose role in society is more mechanical and ‘left-brained’, just as Taylor said, “the more peace we will project into the world, and the more peaceful our planet will be.” Personally, however, I only find myself focusing on the right hemisphere of my brain at random moments when unforeseeable stimuli will trigger a moment of this euphoria and clarity. I will admit that drugs have given me this effect before, but it’s usually a false sense of clarity, due to the massive amount of serotonin being released into my brain. If I were to get ‘lucky’ and have a stroke (or something with similar effects), I believe I’d react similarly to Jill Bolte Taylor, and be in complete awe at the understanding of the energy around me. All in all, it’s wickedly ironic how we are given these two sides of our brains that make us perceive our surroundings differently, and that to properly create a society where survival is no longer a priority we need both of these hemispheres, however, now that we are at this point in human civilization, it could be useful for scientific or philosophical purposes to stay in just the right side, and interpret meaning through this extraordinary lens.

  1. If I only had the right hemisphere of my brain I would be fine with it. It would be a world with just me and my conscious. I feel like my ideas and creativity will enhance without my left hemisphere. I would feel free from the complex thought and logic that the left side brings. The only down side I believe is that you can't express your thoughts and creativity to other people without the left brain. You're basically isolating yourself from the world and releasing all connections to it. Other than that, right brain would still be the choice for me.

  2. I completely agree with your stance on this topic.I would love it if we could control this with just a thought but unfortunately it is not. Sometimes it feels the more you try to let go and step into the right hemisphere the tighter your grip is on the left as you become more and more self aware. But I think those moments when your under the influence of drugs or even when you space out and don't really think about anything, I think those are the moments your closest to right hemisphere immersion. But those moments are fleeting and certainly aren't influential to the progression of world peace. But on a personal level its amazing to even think of the creative and philosophical thoughts one would have if you could switch at will between the two.

  3. I agree with you in that I would choose the right hemisphere to live in but I know that I usually stay in the left in my everyday life right now. I know that I am always thinking about the past and what I could’ve done differently in certain situations throughout my life. I also find myself looking into the future a lot because I like to have plans and know I am getting things done I needed or planned to do. I also know that I think in language and majority of other people do too. So I am making a guess that mostly everyone lives their lives mostly with their left hemisphere also. However, I believe If I had the choice I would choose to live in the right. I like the example you used when she said “if I have found Nirvana and I'm still alive, then everyone who is alive can find Nirvana.” I also believe that being able to find your own Nirvana would be so nice. Being able to just disconnect and be at peace with everything would just be so calming and nice. You would be able to experience that great feeling of euphoria that everyone enjoys. So in the end I believe that like majority of others I live mostly in the Left but I believe being able to live in the Right would be much more peaceful and enjoyable.
