5 senses

Our five senses are vital to our surviving with each playing a very important role for our protection and safety. Having to choose out of my five senses which is the most and the least trustworthy, I would say my sight it the most trustworthy and my smell is the least trustworthy. Sight is the most trustworthy sense that we have because we perceive a lot of thing and the eye can see the beauty in things or the danger that is around whether it be a car accident, fire or a burglary taking place. In the podcast Colors, sight is almost characterized as untrustworthy. Yes us humans have a different view and perspective than those of animals and what we see can lead to false information, but that is not the case all the time. I do believe sight is a trustworthy factor just because we depend on it so much and what we see at least half of the time is true. For the least trustworthy sense, if I had to choose, would be smell. If we lost the ability to smell scent I believe it wouldn’t be bad because we wouldn’t smell bad and foul odors. Though, in losing the ability to smell, we wouldn’t be able to smell ourselves to see if we need to freshen up or not. A teacher I had in the 5th grade lost her sense of smelling scents and as people were smelling the scent of a skunk, she was smelling lemmons. Yes our nose is something that true to what it does, which is smell, but I do think that smell could be least trustworthy.

  1. I can see where you're coming from but i disagree. Maybe its just cause I've need glasses my whole life but I could never say sight is my most trustworthy sense. I also can't agree with your opinion on smell either. It's definitely the first I would lose if I had to choose but its never really let me down if I smell something burning or if i need deodorant or something. In terms of trust I would say touch is first and hearing is last. Touch or the feelings that attribute to it are universal and you're never confused when you touch something its always soft, hard, hot, or cold. Hearing on the other hand can really confuse you. Just think about walking home in the dark and you're just hearing noises not only do you not know what these noises are but more often then not there harmless. But I think it varys on the person based on which senses have always come though for someone personally.

  2. I agree with Tre, in that I disagree that sight is the most trustworthy of the five sense. Sight is the least trustworthy of the five senses. Reflecting on what was said in the podcast, in addition to also having worn glasses most of my life too, sight is a liability. For example, in the podcast, linguist Guy Deutscher mentions the creation of words for color do not occur randomly in history. While some languages have different orders of creation for each color, Deutscher stated that the first color word created was always red and the last word was blue. This demonstrates the idea that sight is constantly changing, evolving to be able to see and process more information. This is further elaborated upon when Jay Neitz talks about tetra chromatic women. Shown by their genes on their two X chromosomes, these individuals have an extra color receptor that theoretically means they should be able to see more colors compared to the average trichromatic individual. However, as shown in the study done by Neitz’s colleague, most of the women who had the genetic mutation did not see a difference in between colors.
While discussing the least trustworthy, the most trustworthy of the five senses is touch. Tactile is the most trustworthy because it leaves little to absolutely no room for interpretation. The other four senses are stimulated through non-contact interactions, leaving touch the only sense where physical touch is needed for sensory stimulation.

  3. I disagree but agree at the same time , i beleive the sight of the 5 senses is the most untrustworthy becauses our eyes sometimes decieve us at times, because we think we saw a ghost or a UFO sometimes and most of the times its just being scared previously to something we have watched unless you just a believer not to mention people who are color blind or see different shades of colors. For example, in the podcast, linguist Guy Deutscher mentions the creation of words for color do not occur randomly in history. While some languages have different orders of creation for each color, Deutscher stated that the first color word created was always red and the last word was blue. this is a prime example as maxwell stated that sight is changing.the most trsutworthy to me is touch to me, i feel touch is valuable, it lets you know was real and whats not like a bad dream that felt real.
